The Partners
#SPAICER was initiated by DFKI and RWTH (TIME & WZL).
DFKI
The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) GmbH is Germany’s leading business-oriented research institute in the field of innovative software technologies based on artificial intelligence methods. The DFKI research group Smart Service Engineering (SSE), headed by Prof. Dr-Ing. Wolfgang Maass, develops solutions for the systematic conception and development of smart service systems at the interface between technical and business issues. AI-based methods, technologies and platforms for the acquisition, storage and analysis of sensor-based and unstructured data sets are developed and applied for the derivation of Smarter Services. In this project, preliminary work in the areas of Knowledge Representations (Semantics), Distributed AI, Machine Learning and Self-adaptive Systems will be carried out. Technologically, the peer-to-peer platform TUCANA will be introduced, which enables the distributed processing of sensory data using machine learning methods and has already been successfully tested in various research projects.
RWTH-WZL
Across the world and for many decades now the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University has stood for successful and forward-thinking research and innovation in the area of production engineering. In six different work areas, research activities not only relate to fundamental theories and findings but also to the application of findings in an industrial context. Furthermore, practical solutions are worked out for the purposes of rationalising production. These activities are being intensified on the RWTH Aachen Campus in the Production Engineering Cluster. The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering is headed by four professors: Thomas Bergs, Christian Brecher, Robert Schmitt and Günther Schuh. The exemplary fineblanking process has been researched for several decades at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL at RWTH Aachen University at the Chair of Manufacturing Technology, headed by Prof. Thomas Bergs. In this context, the sensor technology of the available fineblanking system has been continuously refined over the past few years and research into the potential of this cyber-physical system has been driven forward. The research work also focuses on the process chains on which fineblanking is based. The fineblanking system under consideration is also part of the RWTH’s Internet of Production excellence strategy. The focus is on using data-driven understanding of manufacturing processes and cross-organizational data sources to optimize manufacturing processes in order to be able to react dynamically and flexibly to fluctuations in processes and process chains. The understanding of these interrelationships is a basic prerequisite for an AI-controlled resilience system in production and is introduced into the research project by WZL-TF.
RWTH-TIME
The Institute for Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) at the RWTH Aachen University conducts research in the field of technology and innovation management from a strategic, behavioural and computational perspective. Under the direction of Prof. Frank Piller, extensive research has been carried out over the past decade in the areas of open innovation, co-creation and the involvement of customers in the innovation process, innovation culture, business model development and customer-oriented value creation. The institute is an integral part of the TIME Research Area at the Faculty of Economics of RWTH Aachen University. In TIME, more than 100 senior and junior researchers work at the interface between innovation, technology management, marketing and entrepreneurship. Current research focuses of RWTH TIM are the transformation of established organizations in the face of disruptive technological innovations, such as industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, learning systems, smart products & services, or additive manufacturing; the systematic development and evaluation of new business models as well as social challenges in connection with new technologies (responsible innovation).
